the earth is burning
in our backyard
we sit among the flowers
legally buzzed
drinking cola
and soaking the raspberries

yesterday’s drama
is but a hazy
sad memory
ragtag remnants
of war without end

a foolish neighbor
breaks the moment
bringing us back

the elusive bumblebee
and gentle sounds
of tumbling water
echoes my love’s
peaceful
repetitive creativity
plotting tomorrow’s joy
and responsibility

as this moment
of privileged magic
moves on down
the memory hole
we pledge our allegiance
to the suffering masses
the burning planet
thirsting for justice
buried in the rubbish
of capitalism

the foul stench
from generations
of cultural grift
and colonial backwash
inculcated
like microbial plastic
into the very fabric
of a broken world

eaten by worms
and murder hornets
it pollinates the flowers
with toxic reality
burning
ever burning

an underestimated
furious future
all found
all to be addressed
with loving awareness
of the myriad moments
in all the backyards
of possibility
hopelessly abundant

to the end of time
