From August 2003 to January 2004, I was living and working in Pearl City but spending much of my time on the north shore.

My favorite beach to swim and just hang out during that time was Sunset Beach (or Paumalū) and the beauty and calm I found there, helped me to get through what was one of the most challenging times of my life.

I’d often drive up right after work and have a swim or just play in the shore break if the waves were too rough and for a while, I made a habit of taking a photo of the sunset from the same spot every time.

My chosen spot was just under a palm tree known as “The Miracle Tree” or also as simply “The One Tree”. The tree had been pushed over by a storm and yet survived. It was a favorite shady spot to sit and watch the beautiful sunset.

“The Miracle Tree” is gone now but I’m glad I had the chance to enjoy it.

I hope you enjoy the slideshow of sunset photos here. I’ve also included a few of myself with my guitar and one with a dear friend Cab Spates who I met at this spot, now fifteen years ago. Cab and I are still great friends although I don’t see him nearly as often as I’d like.
