The Life of Brian (In the Now)

I love to journal by telling stories. What’s going on in the life of Brian, in the now. Whether it be from stuff that happens at work, while hanging out with friends or while working on other creative projects. Stuff happens that I may just feel a need to interrupt my usual memoir-writing activity, that is this blog’s primary function. I share those stories here.

4/6/18: Dream Update

I see a notification to update my iMac and click to install without reading. The familiar process bar under the Apple logo takes much longer than I'd anticipated. I'm reminded by a quick flash of memory... this is an update to the operating system so it must be a major one to be taking so long. I [...]

4/5/18: Holding Space with Unknown Fire

Some say the world will end in fire, Some say in ice. From what I’ve tasted of desire I hold with those who favor fire. But if it had to perish twice, I think I know enough of hate To say that for destruction ice Is also great And would suffice. ----- Robert Frost -------------------------------------------- [...]

3/18/18: Listening to the Pain (Part three, Kindness Returns)

"There are three ways to ultimate success: The first way is to be kind. The second way is to be kind. The third way is to be kind." ------  Fred Rogers -------------------------------------------------- The third and final of the three stories that my Thursday evening shift at work inspired, is not about a passenger, or a [...]

3/17/18: Listening to the Pain (Part two, Buddha on the Road)

I want to share three stories that yesterday evening's shift at work inspired. This will take three posts -------------------------------------- The second of the three stories my Thursday evening shift at work inspired, is also about a passenger. But this time I'd only transported her once before. Only a few days before actually... on Tuesday. On [...]

3/16/18: Listening to the Pain (Part one, Not So Hidden Hate)

So I pretend to ignore Hey, that pain is such a bore But there’s just no way And if I try to embrace... or even replace That pain, just gets stronger every day --------------------------------------------- So much there So little space In which to... Hold ------ I want to share three stories that yesterday evening's shift [...]

3/5/18: In Service

The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others. ------ Mahatma Gandhi ------------------------------------ One of the first pickups of my shift yesterday was for a young man who uses a wheelchair. And the last pickup of the evening was for a middle-aged woman... who also uses a wheelchair. But [...]

2/24/18: Unconsciously Choosing Paradox (Part Seven, The Monkey in my Imagined China Shop of Unsubstantiated Fears)

And so, to me, this idea of true belonging is a type of belonging that never requires us to be inauthentic or change who we are, but a type of belonging that demands who we are — that we be who we are — even when we jeopardize connection with other people, even when we have [...]

2/22/18: Unconsciously Choosing Paradox (Part Six, Where Angels Fear to Tread #3)

Human skin… the largest organ of our body, is both internal and external. It’s an interactive network providing us with a conduit for the physical, sensory and communicative transmission of data between our essential inside selves and our surrounding environment. ---------------------------------------- Yup... I like this metaphor better. Since a better network has little to do [...]

2/21/18: Unconsciously Choosing Paradox (Part Six, Where Angels Fear to Tread #2)

Vulnerability is not weakness. And that myth is profoundly dangerous. ------ Brené Brown ----------------------------------------- I've been looking at the "thick skin" metaphor and how that pertains to my take on the general topic of vulnerability. Googling quotes about having a thick skin gets a mix of classic stuff about the need for mental and emotional toughness [...]

2/19/18: Unconsciously Choosing Paradox (Part Six, Where Angels Fear to Tread #1)

“One of the greatest acts of courage is to be vulnerable with someone with whom we disagree” ------ Frances Kissling ----------------------------------- Skin, you gotta have skin It's the stuff that keeps your insides in You gotta have skin I couldn't find any reference to this song online. All I can find is the similar song by [...]
