“So Brian… remember in, remember in, in the movie, the movie Under Siege two, Dark Territory, Travis Dane uses Grazer One to destroy a Chinese chemical weapons plant?”

———————————————————

During our very first conversation a little over a year ago (and in many of our other early interactions) Luke Gonzales’s quick and sharp, stutter-like way of speaking was very pronounced. That intense focus and apparent lack of empathy common with people who have autism can come off as quite rude. Occasionally, Luke would cut me off when it was clear that I wasn’t following him the way he needed me to.

They way he needed me to.

I know this, because he told me. That day Luke first decided to speak to me, he told me about this movie character Travis Dane. He described Dane (played by Eric Bogosian) in great detail. Right down to the type of suit and color tie he was wearing. And when I said I didn’t remember the movie that well because I’d only seen it once, and that was when it first came over twenty years ago, he said he needed me to remember.

He said he needed me to remember.

“Brian, I, I, I, I, I need you to remember Travis Dane the former U.S. government computer hacker and computer genius who worked on the Grazer One Project. He, he was wearing a grey tweed suit and a red and white tie with a blue shirt.” Luke’s insistent tone was more intense now and the speed in which he spoke was exceptional. “Travis Dane worked on Grazer One, a top-secret military satellite particle weapon designed to destroy underground targets. The military fired Dane due to his mental instability; Dane later faked his suicide.”

For some reason, Luke was focusing on this one character and needing me to focus on the same thing. I have no idea why but again this story will have to be…

To be continued…
