three friends are talking about art
they’re all artists so it’s ok
most people don’t talk about art at all
they just say things like “i like that” or “i don’t like it” and leave it at that or else they say nothing

not all artists like to talk about art
many of them would rather just do it

but these three artists are enjoying talking about art and what it means to be an artist until one of them brings up what it means to be a professional artist and suggests that in this society a professional artist is one who makes a living making art

this does not go over well with the others

one of them is strongly opposed to the linking of professionalism to money in any way and insists that being a professional is solely about things like integrity, intent, execution, experience, presentation, perspicacity and focus

the other artist doesn’t really want to talk about it but agrees that being a professional is about much more than making money so the one who brought it up tries to explain that while all those things are very true, it is also true that in this money-driven society a professional artist is defined that way, as one who makes a living making art

regardless of what the artist or anyone else thinks about it

there is a short pause in the conversation until one of them suggests they all go and see a monster movie

everyone is happy to agree to that

Peace/Love
