Whatever you practice, you’ll get good at.

From last night’s dream…

A huge truck (an “eighteen-wheeler”) approaches.

It’s obviously custom-built as a luxury vehicle and the guy standing next to me is operating it by remote-control. He insists I get in so he can give me a ride to the concert. My sweetheart gave me the ticket but she’s not here for some reason. The man offering me the ride is a “little person” and the entrance of his lavish mobile-home is high above the ground. He swings himself up and in like a gymnast.

Like he’s practiced this move many, many times.

——

I awake and make a semi-conscious note of this image. I also try and gather some of the other random and fast-fleeting images, sounds and thoughts from what my mind is now experiencing as a kind of mental mosaic. If I keep at it, I can recall quite a lot sometimes.

It’s something I’ve practiced many, many times.

——

All I get this time however, is the mosaic but it’s not all that interesting so the details quickly fade. I get up to write anyway, hoping to grasp enough to start an interesting piece. When I’m in this state, I’ve found that it’s often a good practice to look for inspiration from photos I’ve taken recently. I find nothing there and my mind immediately goes to my default source of creative encouragement.

My sweetheart.

I think of last night’s phone call which reminds me of how good we are for each other and how much I love her and how much I want to express my love in everything I do. I pick up a postcard she included in the package she used when she sent me some silk underwear after our time together last summer. I take a photo of the note on the back of the postcard and upload a portion to Instagram so I can use the filters I like. I save the image on my hard-drive and then I delete it from Instagram.

It’s my practice to keep this kind of thing private.

——

The photo on the postcard is of a whole lot of underwear (silk maybe?) suspended by wires just above an open field. I look up the artist who took the photo and read all I can about him online. I don’t find a lot, but enough to see he’s a fine artist. Many of his other photographs are quite interesting.

Taking good photographs take a lot of practice.

——

Once again I appreciate how cool of an artist my sweetheart is that she chose this postcard to accompany the silk underwear. How thoughtful she is. She is so very thoughtful about everything that matters to her. This makes me feel how much I matter to her and how much she loves me. This makes me want to do the same for her. This makes me want to show her how much she matters to me and how much I love her.

This piece is just another way for me to practice that.

Hopefully I’m getting better.

Blessed…
